Jurassic Yard:
Living Fossils Reimagined

Project Brief

Evoking people's love for plant fossils is a difficult thing for a wide range of audiences. Unlike when we talk about dinosaurs, people find it difficult to understand the importance of knowing fossil flowers or leaves. Our task force in Indonesia under the Species Obscura Foundation decided to craft a storytelling of "Jurassic Yard", and collect modern plants that have ancient lineage, where the fossils are found around the world. To make the audience relate to these plants, the team mainly collects the plants that Indonesian people cook every day. The collections are then made into a series of merchandise, in which every product has an explanation of the plant and its ancient history.

The first rollout of this merchandise set was launched at Ragam Flora Indonesia 5 Art Jam Event (May 31st, 2025) by IDSBA (Indonesian Society of Botanical Artists), in Bogor Botanical Garden, as a part of Botanical Art Worldwide 2025. It was a success, where more than half of the stocks sold out and delivered the stories of plant fossils. The merch stocks are now available on various offline stores and weekend markets, to spread more words about fossil forests.

In September 2025, this project collaborates with Ourchetype Lab to open its exhibition in the heart of the creative community in Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. The exhibition features microscopic pictures of fossil wood, merch, parts of our paleobotany toolkit, an interactive area, and a series of narratives about the world of paleobotany and fossil plants.
